Now I KNOW this headline is going to get laughed at by people who don't take care of their facial hair.
But, beard health on holiday is something you should consider.
Why?
For most people, there can be many reasons. Heat, humidity, chlorine from pools, air conditioning, wind, change in diet, excess alcohol, bitten by a raptor etc. All of these can lead to dry, brittle facial hair which can cause it to break or fall out.
Recently I was in Florida and I experienced all of the above, but I was aware of it and took measures to keep my beard health as normal as possible.
In preparation, I took with me;
1 x 100ml bottle of
Braw Beard Wash
1 x 50ml bottle of
Braw Beard Oil (Anniversary 18)
1 x
Braw Beard Butter (Chocolate Orange)
1 x
Braw Beard Comb
1 x
Braw Beard Brush
It sounds like a lot but it all fits in a regular sized toiletry bag.
Be conscious of beard health
Heat, wind and air conditioning.
The temperature was around 31C in Florida at the time which is very warm compared to what we usually get in Scotland. Every building we walked into had air conditioning blasting too which plays havoc with beard health. The intense heat and air conditioning both dry the hair out to the point by the end of the first day my beard felt very brittle. It was at this point I realised I had to be aware and take more care of it than usual for the rest of the trip.
What I used and when.
When I arrived back on the 1st night, I realised I'd been caught out so I washed with the
Braw Beard Wash and then applied more
Braw Beard Oil than usual to give it a deep condition.
For the rest of the trip, on days where I knew we'd be in the heat and air conditioning a lot of the time, I would wash in the morning with
Braw Beard Wash, apply
Braw Beard oil and
brush it through. I'd take the
beard oil with me and leave it in the car for use before we drove back to the accommodation.
Humidity.
In the humidity, I don't know about you but my beard tends go a little bit frizzier than normal. When the hair goes frizzy or curlier than usual, the first instinct is to comb it to detangle but the heat that comes with humidity is bad for beard health, so be careful.
What I used and when.
Once we were back at the accommodation I'd apply
beard butter (a little more than usual) to moisturise the hair then gently
comb my beard to detangle. Once any snags were out, I'd use the
boar bristle brush to evenly distribute the
beard butter through the hair.
Chemicals in swimming pools.
We spent A LOT of time in the water parks in Orlando, we even ended taking a surfing lesson in one. Chlorine is used as a disinfectant in swimming pools and it used to break down dirt, oil and bacteria. It can damage the natural oils in your facial hair, not ideal for beard health. After being in swimming pools you may have noticed your hair feels very dry for the rest of the day? Me too.
What I used and when.
In the morning I used
Braw Beard Wash to clean my beard and applied a little
Braw Beard oil.
But I took the full kit with me to the waterpark! After I was finished there, I used
Braw Beard Wash again in the shower. The natural shampoo with added aloe vera helped moisturise the hair and skin bringing it back to feeling normal again.
After towel drying it, I then gently
combed my beard, applied
Braw Beard Oil,
combed again, applied
Braw Beard Butter and then
brushed it through. This gave the beard a deep condition which helped for the rest of the day in the heat.
For the surfing, I did use a bobble in my beard to prevent catching long beard hair in between my hands and the board but after a few wipeouts, that fell out somewhere...
Change in diet and excess alcohol.
I was aware we'd be eating more than usual and more junk food than normal, we were on holiday, treat yo'self. Add that along with a few beers most nights, my follicles weren't getting the nutrients they are used to. I was conscious of this though.
What I used and when.
I just made sure I drank plenty of water during the day to stay hydrated and ate fairly healthy meals for dinner.
Bitten by a raptor.
Shit happens.
What I used and when.
Let it do what it wants, it's a raptor. If you do choose to run, it's maybe worth taking
Relax and Recover bath salts for the muscles afterwards.
I hope that has helped explain why being conscious of beard health is useful. Whether you are on holiday or not, you may face these elements often and it's worth taking precautions. Dry and brittle facial hair becomes damaged easily and can lead to it snapping and falling out. This is what I did to combat the elements, it is just to give you a rough idea if you are in a similar situation. Everyone is different though, you may use more or less product than I did.
Thank you for reading.
