From Macmerry to the World
I grew up in Macmerry - a small mining village in East Lothian where everyone knew everyone. That sense of connection, of people looking out for each other, has never left me. It shaped who I am and how I run Braw Beard to this day.
I wasn’t the loudest in the room growing up. I was the quiet, hardworking type who kept my head down and just cracked on. I had friends, sure, but confidence took time to build. The Brawtherhood you see now? It was born from that same desire for real connection, support, and shared stories. Not corporate speak. No fluff. Just real people, real beards, and a bit of banter.
The turning point: A crash, a beard, and a daft idea
In 2011, I crashed my mountain bike during training and broke my neck and back. C7 and T1. I should’ve stayed off the bike for 6 months, but I didn’t. Two weeks later, neck brace on, dosed up on painkillers, I raced anyway, and finished 18th out of 133!
That crash changed my life. During rehab, I was introduced to massage therapy and how to blend oils. My girlfriend (now wife) was using hair oil at the time, and it hit me, what if I could make something for beards?
I was a bearded mountain biker dealing with constant helmet strap irritation. I had the knowledge. I had the need. So I spent months creating what would eventually become Braw Beard oil.
Why Braw Beard is different
This isn’t some trendy lifestyle brand run by influencers or faceless suits. It’s me, JJ, and the values I grew up with: graft, loyalty, pride in your work, and looking out for your people.
Every bottle is handcrafted in Scotland using the finest natural ingredients. No nasty preservatives. No fillers. Just proper beard care that delivers real results. That’s what Scottish beard care means to me, craftsmanship with a backbone.
Braw Beard oils are made in small batches in the Braw Lab. I use hempseed, jojoba, argan, vitamin E, and therapeutic-grade essential oils. Not because it’s trendy. Because it works. Because it's what I use myself.
