Beard Oil vs Beard Balm: Which One Do You Actually Need?
Beard Oil vs Beard Balm: Which One Do You Actually Need?
One of the most common questions in beard care is:
"Should I use beard oil or beard balm?"
The answer depends on your beard length, your styling needs and what you're trying to achieve.
Many men assume they need one or the other.
The reality is that beard oil and beard balm serve different purposes and understanding the difference can dramatically improve how your beard looks and feels.
After making beard care products since 2012, here's my take on when to use beard oil, when to use beard balm and how they work together.
What Does Beard Oil Do?
Beard oil is primarily a conditioner.
Its job is to:
• Condition beard hair
• Moisturise the skin underneath
• Reduce beard itch
• Help prevent beard dandruff
• Soften coarse beard hair
• Improve overall beard comfort
One of the biggest misconceptions in beard care is that beard oil is only for the skin.
It isn't.
It's called beard oil for a reason.
A quality beard oil conditions both:
• The beard hair itself
• The skin beneath the beard
When applied properly, beard oil helps keep your beard soft, healthy, manageable and comfortable to grow.
For shorter beards especially, beard oil is often the most important product in a grooming routine.

What Does Beard Balm Do?
Beard balm is primarily a styling product.
While it still offers conditioning benefits, its main purpose is to provide:
• Light hold
• Shape
• Control
• Styling assistance
• Protection from the elements
Most beard balms contain ingredients such as:
• Beeswax
• Shea butter
• Cocoa butter
• Mango butter
These ingredients create a thicker product than beard oil.
When warmed between your hands and applied to the beard, the balm helps keep wispy hairs under control and provides a more structured appearance.
If your beard often looks untidy, sticks out at the sides, or struggles to hold shape, beard balm can make a noticeable difference.

Beard Oil vs Beard Balm: The Key Difference
The easiest way to think about it is:
Beard oil for conditioning
Beard balm for styling and conditioning
Both products can:
• Moisturise skin
• Condition hair
• Improve beard health
But beard balm adds an extra layer of control that beard oil alone cannot provide.
Which Product Is Best For Short Beards?
If your beard is relatively short, beard oil is usually the better choice.
Why?
Because your primary focus at this stage should be:
• Healthy skin
• Comfortable growth
• Preventing itchiness
• Softening new beard growth
A quality beard oil can often handle all of these needs on its own.
For many men growing their first beard, beard oil is the product that delivers the biggest immediate improvement.

Which Product Is Best For Long Beards?
As your beard gets longer, styling becomes increasingly important.
Longer beards often develop:
• Flyaway hairs
• Uneven shape
• Frizz
• Loss of structure
This is where beard balm comes into its own.
The additional hold helps maintain shape while still providing conditioning benefits.
Personally, if I could only choose one product for my own beard, I'd probably choose beard balm because my beard is longer and benefits from the added control.

Can You Use Beard Oil And Beard Balm Together?
Absolutely.
In fact, this is what many experienced beardsmen do.
A simple routine might look like this:
Step 1: Wash Your Beard
Use a beard specific wash that cleans without stripping away natural oils.
Step 2: Apply Beard Oil
Work the oil through:
• Skin
• Roots
• Mid-lengths
• Tips
Step 3: Comb Through
Combing after applying beard oil helps distribute the product evenly while reducing tugging and snagging.
Step 4: Apply Beard Balm
Use beard balm to:
• Add shape
• Tame flyaways
• Create structure
• Improve presentation
Step 5: Brush Through
A quality beard brush helps distribute the balm evenly and can add volume by separating and lifting individual hairs.
My Personal Beard Routine
My daily beard routine typically looks like this:
Wash beard
Towel dry gently
Apply beard oil
Comb through
Apply beard balm
Brush into shape
If I'm heading to the gym or tying my beard up for an activity, I may only use beard oil.
If I'm working, filming videos, attending an event or want my beard looking its best, I'll usually add beard balm as well.
So Which One Should You Buy?
If you're only buying one product:
Choose Beard Oil If:
• You're growing a new beard
• Your beard is short
• You struggle with itchiness
• You want softer beard hair
• You want healthier skin underneath
Choose Beard Balm If:
• Your beard is medium to long
• You want more control
• You have lots of flyaway hairs
• You want additional shape and styling
Best Option?
Use both together.
That's where you'll get the full benefit of conditioning, comfort and styling.
Final Thoughts
The beard oil vs beard balm debate isn't really about which product is better.
It's about understanding what each product is designed to do.
Beard oil keeps your beard healthy.
Beard balm helps keep your beard looking its best.
For most men, the ideal routine eventually includes both.
The key is choosing the right tool for the job and building a simple routine you can stick to consistently.
Healthy beards aren't built through complicated routines.
They're built through good habits repeated every day.
