One thing we took for granted was how to comb a beard, we assumed it was straight forward.
But we do get asked how to comb a beard properly, as it turns out, there are a few steps that we just done without thinking about it.
There a few things to consider when combing your facial hair so I wanted to share my thoughts on it.
How hard can it be?
It is not difficult, but there are things to look out for.
Firstly, choosing the right comb.
Because facial hair is thicker and generally more coarse than head hair, it is better to use a wide toothed comb.
If the teeth are too narrow, the beard will be caught whilst combing, resulting in tugging or snapping the hair.
If the teeth are too wide, the comb will glide through the hair without actually de-tangling the hair.
When we created our Braw Beard comb, we took the time to get the teeth spacing right, we found it just right to separate the hairs without tugging and damaging the follicles.
The teeth are also rounded slightly so there's no risk of tearing up the hair.
Squared edges can cut the hair, so look out for this when choosing an off-the-shelf beard comb.
The material from which it's made
Do not use a cheap plastic comb! Often the still have the rough edges from the mould they were made in. Again, these rough edges will cut or split the hair. Plastic combs also can create static, a nightmare for your hair.
We chose to use sandalwood for our natural Braw Beard comb, the wood is smooth and glides through the facial hair with ease, no rough edges, no static. It has a deep wooden smell too.
Don't comb dry
When you do comb your beard, it's better to apply Braw Beard oil before combing. This will help the comb glide through the hair while evenly distributing the oil along the hair.
How to comb a beard
1. Apply some Braw Beard oil to nourish the beard, this will also act as lubrication for the comb to run through the beard easily.
2. Comb the front of the beard first from root to tip. Start at your lower lip and comb downwards slowly and gently. DO NOT comb aggressively, you will risk pulling the hair which will damage the follicles.
3. Comb the sides, again root to tip. Combing your way from the sideburns towards your chin. Once one side is done, repeat on the other side.
4. At this point the visible areas should be combed through. Now comb the underside, going from the throat, forward, again root to tip. This will ensure the underside of the beard is detangled and full. If you have a natural fork in your beard (like me), combing the underside will help fill the gap.
5. Finally, give the front and sides a comb to ensure they are sitting nicely.
Now, you're good to go.
Personally, after combing, I add a little beard butter on my beard, the brush it through (repeating steps 1-5 with the brush) to add volume and thickness. You can find my routine HERE.
I hope this article has helped explain how to comb a beard.

Out with the old and in with the new, after about 10 years of use and a recent washing machine incident my original Braw Beard money clip wallet had to be replaced, loving the look of the new one with the green carbon fibre effect, here’s to another 10 years
Been using Braw products for at least 5 years and love them. Every now and then another product catches my eye and I'll give them a try. Often disappointed and always come back to Brawbeard, it is the best!!
I usually like to try on a hat because of the big head but this one I chanced and it fits great , great quality , materials used are top . Also beard oils are fab
Being from the states, when I order, I see that shipping cost and import fees can be quite expensive. I ponder a moment , then say the product is worth it. I have had a beard consistently since 1988, since coming across Braw Beard wash and oil, my beard is clean, manageable and soft. My facial skin is clean and healthy also. Again the product is better than anything I have tried in the last 37 years. I plan on making many more purchases for the foreseeable future.
I love my new green camo hat . Bought the black one first , which I still love but the green is super bright and looks wicked ,good fit and good quality ....I do love a good cap ....
I might get a wooly bobble hat next as the weather is changing fast ...........
Warrior beard oil my sixth flavour from the mighty Braw! Consistently delivered promptly and well packaged ease the purchase process. The scent is as described to the cultured nose but my simple sniffer says it smells good and rubs in well no grease or stickiness! My facial locks are knocking on 10” and using Braw Beard I have never had any beard druff no itching or adverse reactions! I like the brand the small cottage style industry made with love not mass produced for the trend! Plus as an English man it brings out my inner Scot! 😂Married the love of my life there too! Well done JJ and belated birthday wishes to Mrs Braw.
