One thing we took for granted was how to comb a beard, we assumed it was straight forward.
But we do get asked how to comb a beard properly, as it turns out, there are a few steps that we just done without thinking about it.
There a few things to consider when combing your facial hair so I wanted to share my thoughts on it.
How hard can it be?
It is not difficult, but there are things to look out for.
Firstly, choosing the right comb.
Because facial hair is thicker and generally more coarse than head hair, it is better to use a wide toothed comb.
If the teeth are too narrow, the beard will be caught whilst combing, resulting in tugging or snapping the hair.
If the teeth are too wide, the comb will glide through the hair without actually de-tangling the hair.
When we created our Braw Beard comb, we took the time to get the teeth spacing right, we found it just right to separate the hairs without tugging and damaging the follicles.
The teeth are also rounded slightly so there's no risk of tearing up the hair.
Squared edges can cut the hair, so look out for this when choosing an off-the-shelf beard comb.
The material from which it's made
Do not use a cheap plastic comb! Often the still have the rough edges from the mould they were made in. Again, these rough edges will cut or split the hair. Plastic combs also can create static, a nightmare for your hair.
We chose to use sandalwood for our natural Braw Beard comb, the wood is smooth and glides through the facial hair with ease, no rough edges, no static. It has a deep wooden smell too.
Don't comb dry
When you do comb your beard, it's better to apply Braw Beard oil before combing. This will help the comb glide through the hair while evenly distributing the oil along the hair.
How to comb a beard
1. Apply some Braw Beard oil to nourish the beard, this will also act as lubrication for the comb to run through the beard easily.
2. Comb the front of the beard first from root to tip. Start at your lower lip and comb downwards slowly and gently. DO NOT comb aggressively, you will risk pulling the hair which will damage the follicles.
3. Comb the sides, again root to tip. Combing your way from the sideburns towards your chin. Once one side is done, repeat on the other side.
4. At this point the visible areas should be combed through. Now comb the underside, going from the throat, forward, again root to tip. This will ensure the underside of the beard is detangled and full. If you have a natural fork in your beard (like me), combing the underside will help fill the gap.
5. Finally, give the front and sides a comb to ensure they are sitting nicely.
Now, you're good to go.
Personally, after combing, I add a little beard butter on my beard, the brush it through (repeating steps 1-5 with the brush) to add volume and thickness. You can find my routine HERE.
I hope this article has helped explain how to comb a beard.

I’d always used “high street banded” products on my beard and typically I didn’t buy them for myself e.g… Christmas gift sets etc… from family members. Recently my beard became unbearably itchy it was flaky and felt like a Brillo pad. I’ve been using the Beardruff Buster Pack for around a week now and although it’s early days there’s a noticeable difference in the condition of my Beard, the itching has basically gone already and there are no longer visible flakes on my teeshirt. I’ve no doubt that in a couple more weeks there will be zero flakes and no itchiness given how well the shampoo and oil has done its job in just 1 week. The missus likes how it smells too 😂 cheers guys I’ll be buying more once this lots run out 👍
I can't fault your shampoo. I have been bearded on an off for 15 years ish I have used loads of products even been a brand ambassador to a small home made beard care company. I have never had half the complements on my beard. Whatever the cost I've tried expensive through to the cheapest on the market. Nothing I have used in my time is even close keep up the good work brother.
Hi everyone. I'm weirdo wayne. Been growing my beard for 2years months now. I have tried lots of different stuff for beard. But I found brawbeard last years october/november and it has been a beard game changer. The oils and butters /balms are 1st to none. The brush is a beard life changer too. Beard sits and stays styled all night on my bus. Get great compliments. Best thing i found a new beard family and they have let me in the Brawtherhood. Even just going to there beard competition early this year has just made me fall inlove with my chin fringe. Big love to the Braw beard family.
Absolutely love your stuff JJ just recieved my new anniversary oil and limited tee shirt love them both. Cantcwait for the new brawnson design hat go come out thats alresdy in the basket. Keep up the outstanding work guys and JJ yer some man..🤘
So here's the story.
I won a competition on one of the beard Facebook group (H.O.T.B) I WON SOMETHING!!!! in said 3rd prize I had a bottle of your beard oil 👌 absolutely fantastic stuff smells amazing makes my beard as soft as well a soft thing. So I ran out of my normal beard oil (bugger right) so I ordered off braw Beard. The unscented one. Now it doesn't have a definitive smell like lemon or moss. Although it does smell a little bit like hospital and not in a bad way (if that is possible) I've then ran (ish) upstairs as I was excited to try it. So here's the bit you have been waiting for.... I've got to say I'm very much impressed. The viscosity is better than any other beard wash I have used and doesn't drip off your hand when putting the bottle down. After reading the bottle I wasn't expecting a lot of a lather I was wrong. It's thick and creamy and amazing. I then blow dry and apply the oil and my beard is feeling the best it ever has I now have my new favourite beard brand. Thanks guys
Braw Beard Oil smells nice, my beard feels nice, my skin feels nice, all when I use Braw Beard Oil. It lasts ages too depending how long your beard is.
Heavy set butter
Just a tad bit does a lot
Last for ages and keeps my beard real soft and protected from the elements
And then there is the added delight of the vanilla in top of all that!
High quality beard products from Braw Beard that I’ve been using for the past 3 months. I started growing a beard but when it became scruffy, I shaved it off. Then I saw a YouTube short with JJ saying for people to grow a beard for themselves and don’t worry what other people think. This resonated with me and I have taken heed to the advice he gave. Braw Beard is a wonderful company and JJ shows interest and compassion. I’ve emailed him before with questions and he’s replied promptly. I love the YouTube videos/shorts that take the viewer behind the scenes of Braw Beard. I highly recommend this company for anyone wanting top notch beard care products. You won’t be let down. JJ has made Braw Beard more than an average company. He’s made it a lifestyle and I’m proud to be a loyal customer.
