At the moment, we are being encouraged to wear face masks more often due to the covid-19 threat. Front line workers and some customer facing workers are having to wear theirs ALL DAY!
The photo above is William Andrew McMahon, our Brawther who is an assembly technician working with medical lasers.
As we breathe into the mask, the heat and moisture builds up leading to getting sweaty under the mask. Over time, the build up of sweat can lead to irritation and discomfort.
This can lead to guys shaving their beards off in frustration. The itchiness can become unbearable but there are ways to ease the discomfort which I will discuss later in the article.
Why is getting sweaty under the mask an issue?
Excessive sweating can often lead to a heat rash. Heat rashes can occur in hot and humid climates when some blocked sweat ducts trap the moisture in the skin. The climate under your mask as you breath is hot and humid.
On top of sweating, the air we breathe out is very close to body temperature. If you are working in a fast paced job like a front line worker, your body temperature is going to be higher than if it was resting. This means exhaling warm air directly into your face mask where it is trapped and the moisture works it way through your facial hair, back to your skin.
When the mixture of moisture and sweat eventually dries on the skin (perhaps on the commute home from work) it can clog pores and cause inflammation later on. Clogged pores can lead to ingrown hairs. You can read more about ingrown hairs

Braw Beard Brush
Next I would recommend using a beard brush.
The Braw Beard brush is:
– Made from bamboo
– Medium strength boar bristles to avoid damaging hair & skin below
– Bristles evenly distribute product throughout the beard
– Curved handle for comfort
– Pocket size
– Braw Beard detail engraved in the handle
As well as separating the hairs, the thousands of bristles are great for exfoliating the skin underneath. This helps to clear blocked pores, reducing irritation and preventing ingrown hairs.
When brushing, ensure your brush from the root of the hair to the tip. Starting at the root on the skin will exfoliate, puling dry, dead skin away and off the beard. This will reduce the chance of developing inflammation and itchiness.
