The fear of your beard hair falling out sets in. We've all done it, brushed our beard in the morning and noticed some hairs have jumped ship and are now taking refuge in your brush.
Don't worry!
It is perfectly normal to lose around 50 - 100 beard hairs EVERY DAY! Sounds scary right? But, the average male has around 30,000 follicles on their face, so losing some isn't going to make a dent.
Your hair goes through 3 cycles of life which results in growing, laying dormant then falling out, it's natural.
The 3 cycles that are involved in your beard hair falling out are...
Anagen
This is the growth phase which on average can last between 2 – 6 years, or more in some cases. Genetics plays a large part here. If you naturally grow hair fast, you’ll have an awesome beard in a shorter time than other people. If you grow hair slowly, that’s totally fine, just be patient, good things come to those who wait n all that. The key to growing a great beard is patience and regular maintenance. Everyone seems to want things instantly these days, taking useless supplements to chase results. Slow down and enjoy the journey. On average, hair will grow 1cm every month.
Catagen
Is the stage where the hair has stopped growing but stays embedded in the follicle, just chillin’, kinda showing off and enjoying the view. Behind the scenes, a process is taking place that cuts the hair off from blood supply and the cells that produce new hair, this phase lasts around 2 weeks. Then that hair enters the telogen phase.
Telogen
The phase where a new hair is born and replaces the old dead hair by pushing it out. This is where the anagen stage begins all over with the new hair.
Every individual hair goes through the 3 stages of beard growth at a different rate, this is why you will find random hairs on your desk or dead hairs in your comb/brush. They have been shed through the telogen phase and new hairs are entering the anagen phase. It is completely natural to lose 50 – 100 hairs daily! If your body is under extreme stress, physically or mentally, you may lose more.
(If you are losing much more than 50-100 per day, if it's coming out in clumps and leaving bald patches, go visit your doctor. There are illnesses that can cause hair loss.)
The timeline of the cycles can vary person to person but on average they last as follows;
Anagen – 2 – 6 years (occasionally much longer).
Catagen – 2 – 3 weeks.
Telogen – 3 – 6 months.
Remember
Growing a beard takes time and patience.
Look after your hair with natural beard care products to keep the hair nourished and hydrated.
Don’t tug at the hair aggressively with a comb or brush, be gentle.
Drink plenty of water to keep your body hydrated.
A healthy diet will supply healthy nutrients to the hair via your blood supply, exercise will get the blood flowing.
If you have more growth on one side than the other, visit a good barber who specialise in beards to balance it up for you.
Things that can prematurely cause beard hair falling out are drying it too aggressively with a towel, this can damage the roots.
A poor diet can slow down hair growth, like our bodies we need good nutrients to grow, also extreme stress can cause hair loss.
I hope this has helped put your mind at ease a little when noticing beard hair falling out?
Thank you for reading.

Have used this twice now and have to say it’s really nice, doesn’t leave you feeling really dry after as normal shampoo does which means you can use it a bit more often. Great products as usual.
Fishing big Scottish lochs is great, the native midge isn’t. Tried all the normal stuff but nothing really worked, then the Mrs showed me the Braw Beard Oils GETTAE beard oil video so I got some and it works, they f***ked off the instant I put it on, I now have it on repeat order
This beard wash leaves my beard feeling really good. I know when I haven't washed my beard as it's itchy and I get beardruff. This beard wash deals with this problem superbly
Great products as usual, beard is noticeably softer through out the day when I use these. The smell could last longer but I imagine that’s because it isn’t cheap synthetic perfumes. I’m enjoying artic explorer a lot more than I thought I would! I bought the pump tops to go with them which I would recommend.
I am relatively new to using Beard products so I asked JJ to help me with the product selection as he knows the best scent combinations & when I received the order I was very impressed. My only suggestion with the Thrilla in Vanilla is to recommend using a very light application because the scent is very strong & using it like the Citrus scent beard butter leaves a very overpowering smell like you have a huge vanilla candle underneath your nose. The Beard oil 1813 & the Vanilla combo really works & The Beard Shampoo is a great product that makes my beard feel great
Absolutely amazing. Out all weekend in my garden where there were plenty midge and.I had no new bites, with only a few drops. My partner was surrounded in them (which I found hilarious, cause it's always me) I let him have a few drops and they were gone.
You have NO IDEA.what this means to.me after lifetime of being the one that they always go for, and having the most appalling reaction to them. Here's hoping it continues to be a benefit.
I used to have a custom bearclaw-shaped wooden beard comb made from recycled skateboards, but sadly lost it a few years ago - and the business doesn’t exist anymore to replace it. I’ve been using plastic combs since then, but finally grabbed this one from Braw and it’s been a great replacement.
Lovely finish, feels great in hand, and does an excellent job detangling without snagging. It’s got that satisfying smooth glide you only get from a good wooden comb. Super happy with it.
Side note: if you ever fancy making a bearclaw-shaped beard comb, I’d 100% buy a few 😂
