Ingrown beard hair can be a nightmare, it can ruin your day and your confidence. An ingrown beard hair may appear like a huge spot and they're often quite painful too.
What is an ingrown beard hair?
An ingrown hair is a hair that has grown back into the pore. Hair is supposed to sprout from the pore and continue growing outwards, away from your skin. But sometimes, hair can turn back on itself and grow into the pore again. Other times, dead skin cells can clog the pore which causes new hair to grow sideways under your skin. This will result in inflammation, pain and in extreme cases, it can become infected.
What causes ingrown hairs to develop?
People with very curly facial hair may experience ingrown hairs more than others because of the new hair's tendency to curl back into the skin. Ingrown hairs are common after being freshly shaved too, these little bumps are often called "razor bumps".
Dead skin cells and grime on the skin can block new hair from growing out as normal. This hair will continue to grow, but sideways or downward instead, resulting in a painful ingrown hair.
Anyone can suffer an ingrown beard hair, not just people who shave. Remember, hair goes through cycles of regeneration as explained HERE. Even if you have a full beard, ingrown beard hairs can occur after at the telogen stage.
How to avoid ingrown hairs
As mentioned before, dead skin cells and grime on the skin can prevent the hair from growing as normal. A good beard and skincare routine will massively reduce your chances of developing ingrown hairs.
One of the best tools you can have is a good beard brush. The Braw Beard brush has medium strength bristles, too firm a brush can damage the pores and hair. Our medium strength bristles act as a great exfoliation tool which removes dead skin cells and grime from your pores as well as brushing your facial hair. This reduces dandruff, irritation and clears the pores to allow the hair to grow as intended. Always brush from the root (skin) to the tip of your facial hair for best results.
Check THIS VIDEO for more details on the Braw Beard Brush.
Daily use of Braw Beard oil will moisturise the skin, keeping it supple to provide the best opportunity for new hair (anagen stage) to grow as expected. Using Braw Beard oil will moisturise dry skin, preventing it from blocking pores.
How to treat ingrown facial hair
If you currently have an ingrown hair that is infected or is really bothering you, get advice from your doctor.
If you have a mild ingrown facial hair, using a warm compress for 15 minutes, twice daily will open up the pores after a few days which may allow then hair to grow outwards again.
I hope this article has helped explain what causes ingrown beard hair and how to minimise your chance of getting one.
Thank you for reading.

This is a spare but the original is used daily. It’s good quality and I haven’t seen the bristles falling out. Definitely keeps my beard looking good even though it’s quite short. Great service as well.
I purchased the beard shampoo the 24 anniversary beard oil. I've been using it for a couple of weeks now and my beard is much fuller and softer and no more dandruff coupled with the beard oil thats smells great it's a winner and using the beard bush is a bonus highly recommended.

So in the mother ship of midge land. Isle of Harris. It is fricken hoachin with them and I am slathered up with GETTAE. I hate the wee buggers as they always waste a camping trip. Not this time. No more drinking beer through a midgey net for me. 10/10
The salts do what they say, aid in the recovery of sore muscles 💪🏼 I get them religiously as I simply feel better after I’ve soaked in a bath using them, just wish they’d bring back the 1000ml tub instead of the 350ml & stop using the excuse they can’t find a supplier that can provide a 1000ml tub of plastic? The salts are amazing 🤩
Been a Braw customer since around 2016 - The black series of oils are amazing, and work with my longer/fuller beard especially well.
As with all Braw products I’ve used, a great product and second to none customer service
